Kate Maura is a mixed media artist based in Toronto Canada, whose work is inspired by plein air drawing and wings, namely butterfly wings. She's drawn to their movements which create unusual and beautiful shapes that tell a story. Look closely and you'll find them throughout her canvases, pieced together and blended to create unique and mysterious worlds of their own, sometimes recognizable and sometimes totally transformed. These creatures are metaphor of transformation and crossing other worlds.
Kate has always found inspiration in the natural world, spending time at the family farm and canoe tripping camp in Algonquin Park. Her art focuses on how being immersed in nature makes her feel, a sense of calm, connection a place for meditation on the beauty found in these spaces. Blending her drawings with technology and digitization, layering natural imagery and their colours her work is a mixed media.
“There is an unseen life that dreams us, it knows our true direction and destiny, we can trust ourselves more than we realize and, we need have no fear of change.” (John Odonohue). It is with this sentiment that Kate creates images that are beautiful, portraying that we are a part of something greater, that we can trust from within ourselves if we are willing to learn and do the work to know ourselves more deeply.
